Special Projects
Christmas Tree Pick-Up
The Waupaca Jaycees team up with Heier's Trucking to pick-up Christmas trees within the Waupaca city limits. Residents can tape a donation to their tree or Jaycee's will knock on their doors and collect a donation. All donations are distributed to local charities, most recently to the Waupaca Miracle Tree.
Jaycee Smoker
Our annual recruiting event. The Smoker is an opportunity for Jaycee's to invite prospective members to join in some fellowship and fun. In past years there has been entertainment (bands, DJ's, Game Show Mania), guest speakers (including Packer running backs coach Harry Sydney!) and great food. Prospective members are always welcome at our monthly meetings but this event allows them to see the group in a more casual atmosphere.
WWSP Trivia Weekend
The University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point campus radio station, WWSP, runs the world's largest trivia contest on the third weekend in April. The contest draws over 500 teams of all ages. Team names are the most creative part of the contest. The 54 straight hour competition is a test of wits and wills. The are 8 questions an hour plus running questions and music questions. The questions are tough and everyone gets a little punchy after staying awake for three days. The Waupaca Jaycees have had a team for the past three years.
Picnic Table Project
Each year the Waupaca Jaycees spend a day building picnic tables which are then donated to the Waupaca Parks & Recreation Department to replace those that are broken throughout the previous year. For the past several years the funding for this project has been through a grant from the city hotel-motel tax fund. Approximately 15-20 tables have been built each year. During the year 2000, park benches will be added to the project.
Adopt-A-Highway, Adopt-A-Stream, Recycling Center
Portions of U.S. Highway 10 and the Waupaca RIver are cleaner every summer thanks to volunteer cleaning crews from the Wauapaca Jaycees. The group also mans the local recycling center for several hours on a number of Saturdays throughout the year, helping local residents unload their vehicles and sorting recyclables.
Strawberry Fest, Fall-O-Rama
The Jaycees run a Bratwurst and Hot Dog stand at these two Waupaca Chamber of Commerce events. The world-famous Neimuth Steak & Chop Shop brats and natural casing wieners, encased in fresh Colligan Bakery buns are always a hit with about 1000 sandwhiches served.
Iola Old Car Show, Rod & Kustom Show
One of the three largest old car shows in North America, the Iola Old Car Show provides numerous opportunities for local service groups and clubs to raise money. Organizations work on everything from food tents to parking. The Jaycees are in charge of the Swap Meet Registration booth, with such duties as checking in vendors for the more than 4000 swap spaces, providing information to the 125,000 weekend visitors to the show and more.
NFL/Gatorade Punt, Pass & Kick
Over 90 8-15 year old Waupaca Girls and Boys participated in this event in 1998. One local competitor, Katy, made it to the statewide competition held at Lambeau Field during Packer Game. The number of participants has grown over the years and continues to be a positive event for the youth of Waupaca.
