Digital Up-Grade
As you may be aware, you will shortly be experiencing a change in your dialup access from analog to that of digital. This change will take place in the next 5 to 7 days.
Unfortunately, some users may encounter dial-up issues. We encourage you to please call your local Global Gallery tech support number or 1-800-835-4686 if you encounter any connection issues. Please remember that we are dedicated to giving you the best Internet connection available and are happy to help and assist you in any way we can. Go2America has installed state of the art 3 Com Total Control access ports in the Waupaca, Iola and Scandinavia areas. Unfortunately, this new technology is not always compatible with existing customer hardware. If you experience connection issues, you may need to upgrade your computer. Go2America recommends the US Robotics 3 Com Voice 56 k Modems for optimal connections.
Please remember that there are MANY factors that affect modem connection speed. A 33.6 modem will rarely obtain 33.6 connections (it requires a very clean line and clean routing to the server modem); 28.8 and 26.4 are more common. Similarly, a 56k modem will rarely get 56k - most people will obtain 42-49.3k; a lucky few are getting rates in the low to mid-50's. The larger groups that are not achieving 56k, or are achieving rates below 40k are the focus for Go2America. Low 40k rates can indicate a digital impairment that is not correctly compensated for by modem firmware. It can also be related to the quality of your modem and your local telephone wiring. Other devices (phones, answering machines, fax machines, etc.) plugged in to the same line (even though not in use) can also cause lower speeds. Again, problems can also be related to the type of equipment and firmware in the modems you are calling.
As used herein, 56k refers to dial-up modems operating faster than v.34 rates. v.34 allows up to 33.6k connections (although 33.6 is rare; 28.8 is the more common maximum you will get with v.34). The lowest Flex, x2 and V.90 rate is 28,000 (most 56k modems will not connect at a lower than 32k initial rate before reverting to a v.34 connection). Therefore, before you start with the steps below, make sure you have your modem installed correctly, and set the port speed ("maximum speed" in Control Panel - Modems - Properties) to 57,600 or 115,200.
Please avoid plugging your computer into outlets that are controlled by "dimmer switches," as this usually results in frequent disconnects.
We at Go2America sincerely hope that our upgrade to digital technology benefits all of our new Waupaca, Iola and Scandinavia customers. We must be honest however, this upgrade will not occur without some connection issues, debugging, and upgrading for some of you. We ask that you be patient and work with us. In the long run, digital technology will be the norm and will greatly improve your Internet surfing experience.
